Richard E. Trodden has served
Arlington as the Commonwealth’s Attorney since 1993. His office is staffed
with 16 attorneys, including a Chief Deputy and two Deputy Commonwealth’s
Attorneys, along with legal assistants and support personnel. The Commonwealth’s
Attorney is a constitutional officer, elected by the citizens of Arlington
County and Falls Church City to a four-year term, and independent in his
duties from the County. The Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney is
responsible for prosecuting all felony and misdemeanor criminal offenses that
take place in Arlington, in the City of Falls Church (felony crimes only), and
at Reagan National Airport.
Felony cases prosecuted in the Arlington County Circuit Court are assigned to
individual prosecutors. Attorney staff rotate the handling of
misdemeanor cases in the General District Court and in the Juvenile & Domestic
Relations District Court. Mr. Trodden oversees the Victim/Witness
Program, as well as two special prosecutors for high intensity drug
trafficking cases in federal court. In 2002, the Office prosecuted
approximately 1500 felony cases and 8000 misdemeanor
cases.
